The Woman Who Turned Possibility Into Legacy: A Birthday Tribute to Dr. Kate Ufere Okorie
The first day I walked into her office as a lecturer, I met a woman whose smile arrived before her words. Dr. Catherine Kate Ufere Okorie has that rare gift of making people feel seen, valued and capable of more than they imagine.
Working under her leadership, I watched her carry responsibility the way a seasoned farmer carries a basket of seeds, carefully, patiently and with the confidence that every seed would someday become a harvest.
It is therefore no surprise that today, as members of the Uyokanjo Group of Companies and the wider Uyokanjo family, we celebrate a woman whose life has become a beacon of service, excellence and compassion.
As John C. Maxwell once said, “The true measure of leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.” Dr. Kate’s influence is written not merely in records and certificates, but in the countless lives she has nurtured, mentored and transformed.
As a nurse, midwife, educator and administrator, she has devoted her life to building both institutions and people.
Through diligence, vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence, she helped breathe new life into the Abia State College of Nursing, transforming it from a struggling institution into one of the most respected training grounds for midwives in Eastern Nigeria.
By recruiting qualified lecturers, strengthening academic standards and nurturing competence, she helped raise a generation of healthcare professionals whose impact continues to ripple across communities.
Like a skilled gardener who turns neglected soil into a thriving field, she restored confidence to an institution and gave many young people a platform to pursue their dreams.
Her journey echoes the timeless words of Florence Nightingale: “I attribute my success to this, I never gave or took any excuse.”
Today, as Provost of Marjorie Bash College of Nursing, a senior university lecturer, and an accomplished academic leader, she continues to prove that excellence is not a destination but a daily discipline.
Beyond the titles, however, stands a woman whose greatest achievements may never appear on a résumé. She is a loving mother, a compassionate mentor, a diligent worker and a devoted servant in God’s vineyard.
She has a heart that gives without keeping score and a faith that remains steadfast through every season. To many, she has been a source of encouragement; to others, a guiding hand when the road seemed uncertain.
The African proverb says that a tree does not eat its own fruit, and Dr. Kate’s life reflects that truth. Much of her labour has been for the benefit of others.
Today, the entire Uyokanjo Group of Companies proudly joins family, friends, colleagues, students and well-wishers in celebrating a woman whose impact stretches far beyond the classroom and the hospital ward. Happy Birthday, Dr. Catherine Kate Ufere Okorie.
Your life is proof that when purpose meets diligence and faith walks hand in hand with service, one person can leave footprints that become pathways for generations yet unborn.
