Obi Calls on INEC to Release Aspirants’ Credentials Before 2027 Elections

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make public the academic certificates and other credentials submitted by all candidates contesting elective offices.

He said such a move would improve transparency and give Nigerians the opportunity to verify the qualifications of those seeking public office ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi made the appeal on Tuesday after filling out his nomination forms. He noted that the documents required aspirants to state whether they had ever presented a forged certificate to the electoral commission.

According to him, making candidates’ credentials publicly accessible would strengthen confidence in the electoral process and reinforce accountability among political office seekers.

The former Anambra State governor said Nigerians deserve leaders who are willing to subject their qualifications to public scrutiny, adding that openness is essential to building a credible democracy.

He also referenced another question in the nomination form asking whether a candidate had ever been declared of unsound mind, saying it should prompt leaders to examine their actions and priorities.

Obi questioned whether the country’s current leadership could honestly claim to be acting in the best interest of citizens while insecurity, hunger, unemployment and poverty continue to deepen.

He expressed concern over persistent kidnappings and attacks on major roads, arguing that many Nigerians still live in fear despite repeated assurances from government.

The NDC presidential candidate said the country’s worsening economic and security challenges require urgent attention rather than political distractions.

He maintained that greater transparency in the electoral process, beginning with the publication of candidates’ credentials, would help restore public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
