2027: Christian Coalition Seeks US Intervention Over APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

A coalition of Christian and civil rights organisations has appealed to the United States government to intervene over the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) reported plan to retain a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.

The appeal, addressed to US President Donald Trump, the US Congress and diplomatic missions, urges the international community to closely monitor what the coalition described as increasing concerns over religious inclusion and the security of Christian communities in Nigeria.

Speaking under the umbrella of the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN), the coalition said retaining President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on a joint Muslim-Muslim ticket could worsen religious divisions and heighten the sense of exclusion among Christians, especially in the northern part of the country.

The group made its position known in a petition signed by its leaders and released to journalists in Jos, Plateau State.

According to the coalition, Nigeria has traditionally maintained religious balance in its highest political offices, and the APC’s 2023 presidential ticket departed from that practice.

It also faulted the Federal Government’s programme for rehabilitating and reintegrating repentant terrorists, arguing that individuals accused of terrorism should face prosecution through the judicial system rather than benefit from reintegration initiatives.

The coalition further urged the United States to retain Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), insisting that any decision to review the status should be based on independently verified progress in protecting Christian communities.

It also called for thorough and transparent investigations into attacks on Christian populations in Plateau, Benue and other affected states, while seeking sustained humanitarian support for victims displaced by violence.

In the petition, CYAN additionally raised concerns over what it described as possible foreign influence in Nigeria’s political process.

The group alleged that some Arab countries may be backing efforts to retain the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 election, although it did not provide evidence for the claim.

The coalition concluded by urging both Nigerian authorities and the international community to uphold the principles of fairness, inclusiveness and equal protection, stressing that the country’s religious diversity should be reflected in its political leadership.
