FOREIGN: Russian Woman Sentenced to Jail for Writing ‘No To War’ on Ballot Paper

A Saint Petersburg woman has been sentenced to eight days in jail for inscribing “no to war” on a ballot paper during Russia’s presidential election, which saw Vladimir Putin running unopposed for a fifth term.

The election, marred by ballot spoiling, resulted in Putin’s extended rule until 2030. The court accused Alexandra Chiryatyeva of hooliganism and discrediting the Russian armed forces, prompting her jail time and a fine. This incident underscores the crackdown on dissent amidst Russia’s campaign in Ukraine.
