Young African women recruited to Russia under the “Alabuga Start” program have reported being misled about their jobs, which involve assembling drones for military use against Ukraine. Advertised as a work-study opportunity, many found themselves trapped in harsh factory conditions with long hours, low pay, and exposure to harmful chemicals.
Participants described the experience as a “trap,” expressing regret over their decisions. Promised salaries of up to $700 were significantly lower after deductions. As Russia faces labor shortages due to the war, this recruitment of young women raises concerns about potential exploitation and human trafficking.
Human rights organizations are starting to investigate these practices, highlighting the vulnerability of female migrant workers in such environments.
