Africa’s Talking Drum: Why Monkey Never Kept a Secret
The elders of Mabuta Grove liked to remind young animals that a secret is like a seed. Once it leaves your hand, you can no longer choose where it will grow. Whenever children asked if that was true, the old ones smiled and began the story of Monkey.
Monkey was cheerful, playful and impossible to dislike. If laughter had a home, it lived in his chest. But there was one thing Monkey could never keep for long—a secret.
One harvest season, Elephant called the animals beneath the Great Baobab.
“The first mangoes in the eastern grove are ripe,” he announced. “I want us to gather them at sunrise and take them to the old, the sick and the young before anyone else begins to harvest. Let this remain our little surprise until morning.”
The animals nodded.
As they walked away, Elephant called Monkey back.
“I trust you,” he said. “You pass through every corner of this forest. Help me make sure no one enters the grove before sunrise.”
Monkey placed his hand on his chest.
“You have my word.”
He meant every syllable.
On his way home, Hare noticed the smile on Monkey’s face.
“You look as if you’ve swallowed sunshine,” Hare teased. “What has made you so happy?”
Monkey laughed.
“I know something.”
“What is it?”
“I promised not to tell.”
Hare moved closer.
“I am not everyone. I am only Hare.”
Monkey scratched his head.
“Promise you won’t repeat it.”
“I promise.”
Monkey lowered his voice.
“The mangoes in the eastern grove are ripe, but don’t tell anyone. Elephant wants it to be a surprise.”
Hare covered his mouth.
“My lips are sealed.”
He hurried away.
Not long afterwards, Hare met Weaver Bird gathering twigs.
“You look excited,” Weaver Bird said.
Hare smiled.
“I promised not to tell anyone.”
“Then don’t tell anyone,” Weaver Bird replied, pretending not to care.
Hare looked around.
“I suppose one person isn’t everyone.”
By sunset, Weaver Bird had whispered the secret to Tortoise, Tortoise quietly mentioned it to Goat, and Goat shared it with Buffalo because, in his words, “A friend who can keep quiet is no danger.”
Before the moon climbed high, nearly every animal in Mabuta Grove had promised not to tell another soul.
At the first crow of the rooster, the eastern grove was already crowded.
Monkey arrived and froze.
“What is everyone doing here?”
Buffalo looked surprised.
“I thought you invited us.”
“I invited no one!”
At that moment, Elephant appeared with the oldest animals, each carrying an empty basket.
He stopped and looked at the stripped branches. The sweetest mangoes had already disappeared. No one spoke.
Elephant looked around calmly.
“Who brought everyone here?”
The animals pointed in different directions.
“Hare told me.”
“Weaver Bird mentioned it.”
“Tortoise hinted at it.”
“Goat confirmed it.”
Finally, Elephant turned to Monkey.
“My son, where did the journey begin?”
Monkey lowered his head.
“With me.”
“You intended no harm, didn’t you?”
Monkey shook his head.
“No. I only told one friend.”
Elephant smiled sadly.
“And Hare only told one friend. Weaver Bird did the same. So did Tortoise and Goat. Before long, the secret had travelled farther than any of you ever intended.”
Monkey sighed.
“I thought one person could not make a difference.”
Elephant picked a fallen mango from the ground.
“My father taught me that a clay pot does not break because of one crack. It breaks because every crack believes it is too small to matter.”
Monkey’s ears drooped.
“I have disappointed you.”
“You have disappointed yourself,” Elephant replied gently. “A trusted tongue is more valuable than quick words. When people cannot trust your silence, they soon stop trusting your speech.”
Monkey nodded.
“I have learned my lesson.”
From that day, whenever someone said, “Monkey, come closer. I have something to tell you,” he would smile and answer, “If it is meant for everyone, tell me now. If it is meant for only a few, keep it until the right time.”
The animals laughed at his new habit, but they also noticed something else. Monkey no longer carried secrets from one ear to another.
And that is why the elders of Mabuta Grove still tell their children that a secret does not become heavy because of its size. It becomes heavy because too many hands insist on carrying it.
Moral
A secret shared in trust should never become a story told for pleasure. Guarding another person’s confidence is a mark of wisdom and character.
