Spain Defeat Argentina to Reclaim the World Cup

Spain returned to the summit of world football on Sunday, defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup at New York New Jersey Stadium.

The breakthrough finally came in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres capitalised on a loose ball inside the penalty area to score the goal that separated the two sides after a fiercely contested final.

Spain dictated the tempo for much of the match, enjoying the lion’s share of possession and creating several scoring opportunities.

However, Argentina remained in the contest thanks largely to goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, whose string of outstanding saves frustrated the Spanish attack for more than 100 minutes.

Argentina’s challenge became even tougher late in normal time after Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card, reducing the South Americans to ten men before extra time.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Lionel Messi, playing what is expected to be the final World Cup match of his illustrious career, continued to push his side forward.

Argentina, however, found it difficult to break through Spain’s disciplined defence and created few clear chances as the match slipped away.

Spain eventually found the winner when Pedro Porro’s cross was brilliantly rescued from going out by Nico Williams, allowing Torres to fire past Martínez and send the Spanish bench into celebration.

The final ended on a sour note as emotions boiled over after the whistle. Players from both teams became involved in a confrontation, with Argentina’s Leandro Paredes dismissed after shoving Spain midfielder Gavi during the melee.

The showpiece event attracted a host of political leaders, royalty and international celebrities, while an elaborate opening ceremony and a star-studded halftime performance added glamour to football’s biggest stage.

When the celebrations finally began, they belonged to Spain. Their resilience, attacking intent and patience were ultimately rewarded as they dethroned Argentina to reclaim the FIFA World Cup and etch another glorious chapter in the nation’s football history.
