Egypt and Eritrea Unite as Ethiopia Seeks Access to the Red Sea
Egypt and Eritrea are strengthening their ties as Ethiopia renews its push for access to the Red Sea.

This week, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hosted Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Cairo, where both leaders discussed major regional issues such as the ongoing crisis in Sudan, the security of the Red Sea, and the growing tension surrounding Ethiopia’s maritime ambitions.
Ethiopia, which has been landlocked since Eritrea’s independence in 1993, has recently intensified efforts to secure a route to the sea a move that has stirred unease among its neighbors.
Addis Ababa’s maritime aspirations, particularly its interest in ports along the Red Sea, have reshaped political alliances in the Horn of Africa.
Egypt, already locked in disputes with Ethiopia over the Nile waters, now sees common ground with Eritrea in countering what both view as potential threats from Ethiopia’s growing influence.
This rare alignment between Cairo and Asmara signals a shift in regional dynamics. Both countries are positioning themselves to safeguard their strategic interests in the Red Sea, one of the world’s most vital trade routes.
As tensions rise, observers warn that without open dialogue and cooperation, Ethiopia’s bid for sea access could spark new geopolitical rivalries in an already fragile region.
