Norman Cousins says history is a vast early warning system. I am tempted to believe that the American Historian was of the view that history serves as a cautionary guide, providing valuable lessons and warnings about the consequences of human actions and decisions.

Again, by studying history, we can gain insight into the potential pitfalls and dangers of certain choices, allowing us to make more informed decisions and avoid repeating past mistakes.

On this day in 1896, a picture showing the bare breasts of a woman appeared in National Geographic magazine for the first time.

Still on this day in 1897, Italian Sport-Club Juventus was founded by a group of students of Liceo Classico Massimo d’Azeglio.

According to Today in History, it was on this day in 1911, World’s first combat aerial bombing mission took place in Libya during the Italo-Turkish War. Second Lieutenant Giulio Gavotti of Italy dropped several small bombs.

Amazingly, on this day in 1941, American photographer Ansel Adams took a picture of a moonrise over the town of Hernandez, New Mexico that would become one of the most famous images in the history of photography.

Again, on this day in 1954, the Front de Libération Nationale fired the first shots of the Algerian War of Independence.

Regrettably, it was on this day in 1976 that Burundian president Michel Micombero is deposed in a bloodless military coup d’état by deputy Jean-Baptiste Bagaza.

Again in 1984, after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India on 31 October 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards, anti-Sikh riots erupted.

Still on this day in 1997, Titanic premiered publicly at Tokyo festival, launching a global blockbuster career.

Today is the birthday of Francis Arinze, Nigerian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church (born 1 November 1932).
