Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has shed light on why opposition forces came together to remove President Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria’s 2015 general elections.
El-Rufai dismissed the idea that coalitions only form when Southerners lead the country, stating the move against Jonathan was rooted in three key issues: public dissatisfaction with his leadership, his reversal on a promise not to seek re-election, and the urgent need for fragmented opposition parties to merge in order to survive politically against the dominant PDP.
He emphasized the decision was based on performance and political strategy, not ethnicity or regional politics.
Now aligned with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), El-Rufai has joined a new opposition front aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
