ETHIOPIA: Nile River Agreement Takes Effect Amidst Egyptian and Sudanese Opposition

The Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) has officially come into effect despite ongoing objections from Egypt and Sudan, according to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This agreement establishes the Nile River Basin Commission (NRBC) to promote cooperation among basin states on governance.

While Ethiopia and several upstream nations have signed the CFA, Egypt and Sudan have rejected it. Ahmed called on non-signatory states to join, referring to the initiative as the “Nile Family” to encourage equitable resource usage.

The CFA is notable as the first multilateral framework for Nile management, addressing tensions particularly surrounding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Ethiopia views the dam as vital for development, whereas Egypt sees it as a threat to its water supply.
