FIFA Takes Action After Controversial Nigeria — DR Congo World Cup Play-off
FIFA has sanctioned both the Nigeria Football Federation and the Congolese Football Association over incidents that occurred during their November 2025 2026 World Cup play-off match.
According to Sports Village Square, the global football body reviewed events surrounding the encounter and determined that both federations committed separate disciplinary breaches.
Nigeria was penalized after some spectators were reported to have thrown objects onto the pitch during the match. FIFA ruled that the incident amounted to a violation related to maintaining order and security at football games.
Following the ruling, the NFF was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs.
The Congolese federation, however, received a stiffer punishment. Their supporters were found to have used laser pointers and similar electronic devices during the game, an act that breaches Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
As a result, the CFA was handed a 5,000 Swiss Francs fine by FIFA.
