Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu and his wife, Esther, expressed confusion after learning that law enforcement officers visited their home while they were attending court proceedings, Wednesday. Esther Lungu was appearing before the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court on allegations of motor vehicle theft, a case in which she is jointly charged with four others.

Following the hearing, which adjourned late in the afternoon, Mrs. Lungu was overheard asking her husband why police were sent to their residence, stating, “We are here, why send police officers to the house for whatever reasons?”

In response, Edgar Lungu, who was at the court to support his wife, mentioned that investigators had left behind some documentation, though the purpose of the visit remains unclear. The former president, offering advice to his wife, remarked, “Let’s go home. If you become hysterical like hyenas, then the difference between you and them [hyenas] will not be noticed.”

The Lungu family is currently facing multiple legal challenges. The state has filed applications seeking to forfeit 15 flats owned by Mrs. Lungu, which have been deemed proceeds of crime.

Additionally, the state is pursuing the seizure of vehicles and properties linked to Edgar Lungu’s son, Dalitso, who is embroiled in a separate legal battle over accusations that his assets, worth millions, were acquired through grand corruption.

Despite these allegations, Dalitso maintains that his father legally gifted him the properties as part of a family business. However, state investigators argue that Dalitso has failed to provide sufficient evidence or a money trail to substantiate his claims.
