Four African Politicians Compete for Top AU Commission Chair Role

Four prominent African politicians are in the race to become the next Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission. The 55-member body will elect a successor to Moussa Faki Mahamat in February, with the position this year reserved for an East African candidate.

Among those vying for the top job are Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, Raila Odinga of Kenya, Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar, and Anil Gayan of Mauritius. The successful candidate will serve a four-year term, with the possibility of one renewal.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, who hails from Chad, has held the position since 2017, and the upcoming election is expected to be closely watched as the AU navigates significant political and economic challenges across the continent.
