Liberia’s newly inaugurated President Joseph Boakai faced a challenging moment during his swearing-in ceremony on Monday, January 22, 2024.
The 79-year-old leader struggled to complete his speech, requiring assistance as he faltered after approximately 30 minutes of speaking.
Reports suggest possible heat exhaustion with temperatures exceeding 30C.
Video footage captured a moment of support as a man fanned papers near Boakai’s face before he was escorted away.
Despite the interruption, Boakai had already been sworn in as Liberia’s oldest-ever president at the Capitol Building in Monrovia; Vice-President Jeremiah Koung then addressed guests and guided them to the presidential dinner.
Health concerns, a focal point during the election campaign, were addressed by Boakai, asserting that he was in good health and considered his age a blessing to the nation.
