The opposition Unity Party in Liberia has called on the Council of Chiefs and Elders to remove their Chairman, Chief Zanzan Karwor, for what the party termed as a “divisive and praise-singing oration” during the country’s 176th Independence Day celebration.
It can be recalled that President George Weah chose the Chairman of the Chiefs Council to serve as the orator for the nation’s Independence Day celebration as an annual routine.
During his oration, Chairman Karwor blasted the opposition community for doing nothing to improve the livelihoods of the citizenry, while he showered praises on President Weah for the numerous developmental initiatives being implemented across the country since the inception of his administration.
Reacting to the fiery speech delivered by the country’s Chiefs and Elders Council Chairman, Zanzan Karwor, the former ruling, now opposition party, the Unity Party Secretary General Amos Tweh, urged the chiefs and elders in the country to have their Chairman removed immediately for what he termed as “promoting division and raining unnecessary praises on President Weah, who has failed miserably over the years.”
The UP Secretary general said the theme of this year’s Independence Day, which was “giving our people hope for transparent, credible, free, and fair elections,” was never emphasized by the Chairman. Instead, his point of focus was criticizing the opposition for putting the feet of Weah’s administration.
Tweh added that the Chairman has lost credibility and independence, among other qualities, to serve as the head of a body that is supposed to be neutral in the country.
