Lives Lost During Massive World Cup Celebrations in Mexico City

The jubilation that swept through Mexico City after the country’s World Cup victory ended in tragedy as two people lost their lives during overcrowded celebrations, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

According to officials, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from suffocation after enormous crowds flooded the streets following Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador, a result that secured the nation’s place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Emergency medical teams rushed to the scene and attempted to save the victims but were unable to revive them.

The fatal incident happened at the intersection of Hamburgo and Lancaster streets near the iconic Angel of Independence monument, where thousands of supporters had gathered to celebrate the historic victory.

Authorities said they are also looking into reports carried by local media suggesting a possible third death. However, officials stressed that no additional fatality has been confirmed as investigations remain ongoing.

Mexico’s victory over Ecuador marked the country’s first progression to the World Cup knockout stage since 1986, sparking nationwide celebrations that drew enormous crowds into the capital.

City authorities estimated that more than one million people poured into the streets of Mexico City, with the largest gatherings concentrated around the Angel of Independence, turning the city into a sea of jubilant football fans before the celebrations took a tragic turn.
