A civil society group, MoniTNG, has raised alarm over the terrible condition of PCN Primary School in Okokoma, located in the Ofonbongha/Yala Ward of Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria.
During a recent visit, the group found that the school is in very bad shape. Classrooms are falling apart, with cracked walls and roofs that leak when it rains. Students are forced to sit on bare floors because there are no chairs or desks.
“This is heartbreaking,” MoniTNG said. “It is unsafe and makes learning very difficult for the children.”
Because of these poor conditions, many students have stopped attending school. Some young girls are being pushed into early marriages since they no longer have access to education.
MoniTNG said this is not just a local problem, but part of a bigger issue affecting public education in many parts of Nigeria. They are asking the Cross River State Government, the Federal Ministry of Education, and other leaders to take urgent steps.
The group wants the school to be repaired quickly, learning materials to be provided, and new policies put in place to keep children in school.
“It’s wrong for children to suffer like this just to get an education,” they added. “We must fix our schools, train teachers, and make sure every child in Nigeria has the chance to learn in a safe environment.”
MoniTNG also pointed out that the school has been neglected for over 10 years, with government attention only seen during elections.
They urged the government to stop making empty promises and start taking real action now. “The children of Okokoma and others across Nigeria deserve better,” they said. “It’s time to act.”
