Nigeria: Fubara Rejects Claims of Rift With Rivers Lawmakers, Rallies Support for Tinubu

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed reports suggesting tension between his administration and federal or state lawmakers from Rivers, describing the claims as baseless.

Fubara addressed the issue on Wednesday during the commissioning of the extended and dualised 28.4-kilometre Ahoada–Omoku Road.

He said arrangements had long been in place for a meeting with the legislators and that claims he was avoiding them were politically motivated.

According to the governor, the proposed meeting was to be convened by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, elder statesman Ferdinand Alabraba and other senior political leaders. He insisted that allegations of his refusal to engage with the lawmakers were “not truthful.”

The governor, who formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, used the event to urge Rivers residents to continue supporting President Bola Tinubu.

He said his defection was aimed at stabilising the state and ensuring sustained development, rather than pursuing personal political interests.

Fubara encouraged supporters to avoid divisive politics and remain committed to the administration at both state and federal levels.

He restated his commitment to delivering infrastructural projects despite ongoing political challenges.

Recalling his campaign visit to the Ahoada–Omoku axis alongside former Governor Wike, Fubara noted that he had promised residents that the road would be completed if he and President Tinubu won their elections.

He added that the newly completed road would ease movement, strengthen commercial activity and improve living standards for communities along the corridor, assuring that more projects would follow.

Fubara’s defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State, coming two years after he was elected on the PDP platform in 2023.
