Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the killings of unarmed protesters in Nigeria, urging the United Nations and the International Criminal Court to monitor and address the situation.
Reports indicate that security forces have used live ammunition on peaceful protesters, leading to several deaths and injuries. Atiku stated, “When security forces open fire on innocent protesters, they do nothing but exacerbate tensions, transforming peaceful demonstrations into chaos.” He described the violence as reminiscent of military dictatorship and emphasized, “I refuse to believe that inciting violence is the intention of our authorities.”
Security forces in Abuja and Kano have been accused of opening fire on protesters, resulting in casualties. Journalists were also targeted, with some being shot at and harassed. Human rights groups have condemned the excessive use of force. Atiku called on President Tinubu to address the demands of the Nigerian people and protect their right to protest peacefully.
