Nigeria Police Confirm Abduction of Worshippers in Kaduna After Initial Confusion
The Nigeria Police Force has officially confirmed the abduction of more than 100 Christian worshippers in Kurmin Wali, a remote community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following earlier uncertainty surrounding the incident.
The confirmation comes after initial reports of the attack were disputed during a meeting of the Kaduna State Security Council, where some community representatives questioned the authenticity of the claims.
This led to public confusion after remarks by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police were widely interpreted as a denial of the abduction.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that the police never denied the incident but were awaiting detailed field verification before making a formal declaration.
According to the statement, the Force acknowledged the anxiety and fear generated by reports of the abduction and assured Nigerians that thorough investigations have now confirmed that the incident indeed occurred.
“The earlier comments were not intended to dismiss the reports but were part of a careful process to verify the identities and number of victims involved,” the statement explained.
Following confirmation from intelligence and operational units, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical and intelligence assets to Kajuru and neighbouring communities.
Security agencies are now carrying out coordinated search-and-rescue operations in an effort to locate and free the abducted worshippers.
The police said patrols have been intensified in the area, while special units have been mobilised to track the perpetrators and restore calm.
The Force also appealed to the public and media organisations to rely only on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that could jeopardise ongoing rescue operations.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to the protection of lives and property and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops,” the statement added.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to persistent security challenges in parts of Southern Kaduna, where communities have repeatedly called for stronger protection and quicker response to attack.
