Protesters in Umuahia, Abia State’s capital, took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction over the removal of Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who represented Abia Central, from the Labour Party. The Court of Appeal in Lagos declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Col. Austin Akobundu (retd.), the winner of the February 25 senatorial election. The protesters, led by the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, called for a review of the judgment and an investigation into the panel that made the decision. They carried placards with slogans like “Judicial impunity must stop” and “Darlington’s mandate must be recovered.” The LP Chairman criticized the judgment, labeling it as a “rape of democracy” and urged that the judiciary should not overturn the people’s decisions based on technicalities. He questioned the consistency of the panel’s decisions and demanded access to the judgment details for further legal action. The LP Chairman called for the protection of Abia Central’s mandate and appealed for the preservation of Nigeria’s democracy against political manipulation.
