Nigeria: Wike Laments Betrayal by Suspended Rivers Governor Fubara, Alleges Political Manipulation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has voiced deep personal anguish over what he describes as betrayal by the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking in Abuja, Wike said he frequently reflects on the breakdown of their political relationship, especially considering his role in Fubara’s emergence as governor. He revealed that he often becomes emotional when recalling the events that led to their fallout, particularly after Fubara’s suspension in March 2025.

“In quiet moments, I replay the governor’s past speeches. When I remember what he said and did, I can’t hold back tears,” Wike stated.

He likened the situation to a parent betrayed by their own child, recounting the sacrifices he made to support Fubara’s political rise. Wike claimed that Fubara is now being influenced by individuals who have historically opposed him.

“This is someone you supported, fed, and stood by. Then he turns around and becomes a tool in the hands of your enemies,” Wike said, adding a metaphor: “Imagine you send your child to school, provide for him, and one night he returns with armed men to attack you. That’s how I feel.”

Wike also addressed reports suggesting that Fubara has shown remorse and is seeking reconciliation. He remained unconvinced, saying efforts made by some leaders to mediate the conflict have yielded no real progress.

According to Wike, Governors Dapo Abiodun and Dave Umahi, along with a Southwest leader, once brought Fubara to his residence to discuss peace. “They said he wanted reconciliation. I agreed. He said he would return, but I haven’t seen him since,” Wike remarked.

He emphasized that peace cannot be achieved without the involvement of relevant political actors, such as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and party leadership. “It’s not something that can be handled with public statements alone,” he said.

Wike further alleged that individuals in Fubara’s camp had long plotted against him, including filing petitions with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during earlier political disputes.

“These are people who said he would never be governor. Now they’re backing him to try and bring me down,” he said.
