Nigerian police have arrested more than 90 people during a protest over severe economic hardships, where demonstrators were seen waving Russian flags. The arrests come as Nigerians continue to rally against government policies and the soaring cost of living, highlighting the country’s struggle with its most severe economic crisis in a generation.

The Sahel region, known for its strong cultural, religious, and socioeconomic ties to Northern Nigeria, has seen a notable shift in allegiance from Western allies to Russia. This trend was evident during the recent protests, where the presence of Russian flags mirrored similar scenes in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, where citizens have expressed growing support for Russia.

The demonstration in Nigeria is part of a broader wave of unrest across the region, driven by dissatisfaction with government responses to economic and security challenges. The arrests reflect the Nigerian government’s increasing intolerance for dissent as it grapples with rising public discontent.

As Africa’s most populous nation faces these turbulent times, the influence of foreign allegiances and the public’s demand for better economic policies continue to shape the political landscape. The growing visibility of Russian support in the region underlines a significant shift in geopolitical dynamics, further complicating the Nigerian government’s efforts to stabilize the country.

The arrested protesters face charges of unlawful assembly and incitement, according to police statements. Meanwhile, the Nigerian government remains under pressure to address the economic woes that have driven many to the streets in protest.
