Pope Leo XIV Begins Historic 11-Day Africa Tour Across Four Nations
Pope Leo XIV has kicked off his first official trip to Africa, embarking on an 11-day visit that will take him through Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
The tour began on Monday in Algeria, where the Pope is focusing on promoting peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims amid rising global tensions.
The visit also carries personal significance, as he pays tribute to Saint Augustine, whose legacy has deeply influenced his spiritual journey.
Upon arrival in Algiers, he is expected to be received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune before holding formal talks at the presidential palace.
His schedule includes an address to government officials, a visit to the city’s Grand Mosque, and an evening gathering at the historic Notre-Dame d’Afrique basilica.
The basilica event will bring together voices from different faiths, including a Catholic nun, a Pentecostal Christian, and a Muslim participant, highlighting the central message of unity and dialogue that defines the trip.
He will also offer prayers at a nearby memorial dedicated to migrants who lost their lives attempting to cross into Europe.
With the theme “Peace be with you,” the visit underscores a broader call for harmony between religions.
Despite being a predominantly Muslim nation with about 47 million people, Algeria is home to a small Catholic community of roughly 9,000, many of whom are foreign nationals.
During his stay, the Pope will honour 19 Christian martyrs beatified in 2018 and meet with Augustinian nuns involved in humanitarian work that serves people regardless of religious background.
The Algeria leg will conclude with a visit to Annaba, historically known as Hippo, where Saint Augustine served as bishop for many years. From there, the Pope will continue his journey across the African continent.
