Trump Blasts Pope Leo XIV in Rare Public Clash, Labels Him Weak
A fresh rift has emerged between the White House and the Vatican after Donald Trump launched a sharp and unusual criticism of Pope Leo XIV, accusing him of poor leadership and liberal bias.
Speaking to reporters and in a series of social media remarks, Trump questioned the pope’s performance, saying he was “not doing a very good job” and describing him as overly aligned with liberal views.
He also suggested the pontiff should steer clear of political commentary and focus on his religious duties.
The remarks followed comments by Pope Leo over the weekend, where he condemned what he described as a “delusion of omnipotence” driving the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.
Although the pope did not directly name Trump, his message was widely interpreted as a critique of Washington’s posture in the crisis.
In response, Trump intensified his rhetoric, arguing that the pope’s stance on global security issues, particularly Iran’s nuclear ambitions, was misguided.
He insisted he would not support any religious leader who appeared tolerant of such threats.
The pope had delivered his message during a prayer service at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, calling for an end to war and warning against leaders who justify violence while invoking faith.
He has repeatedly emphasized that God does not support acts of war, reinforcing his long-standing position on peace and moral responsibility.
Trump, however, broadened his criticism beyond the Iran conflict, taking aim at the pope’s views on US foreign policy, including past actions in Venezuela.
He also suggested that the pontiff’s emergence as pope was influenced by his American background, a claim likely to stir further controversy.
Despite the escalating rhetoric, such direct exchanges between a US president and a sitting pope remain highly uncommon, underscoring the depth of disagreement between both figures at a time of heightened global tension.
