Pope Leo XIV has strongly condemned the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza, urging global leaders to prioritize humanitarian efforts and put an end to the violence that has claimed countless lives.
Speaking to thousands in St. Peter’s Square and millions across the globe during his first Regina Coeli address on May 11, 2025, Pope Leo appealed for peace, highlighting the need for international cooperation to bring these devastating conflicts to an end.
As reported by PM News, the Pope’s impassioned message called for a collective commitment to preventing further suffering.
The Pope began his address by referencing the immense tragedy of World War II, which ended 80 years ago. He described the war as an “immense tragedy” that claimed over 60 million lives.
Using this historical context, Pope Leo declared, “In today’s dramatic context of a third world war fought piecemeal… I too appeal to the powerful of the world by repeating these ever-relevant words: never again war!”
His message underscored the urgency of preventing a global catastrophe similar to the horrors of the past.
Pope Leo XIV’s focus then turned to Ukraine, where the ongoing war with Russia has displaced millions and caused widespread suffering. The Pope expressed his heartfelt sympathy for the Ukrainian people, saying, “I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people.”
He urged that every effort be made to achieve “a true, just, and lasting peace as soon as possible” and called for the release of prisoners and the reunification of families torn apart by the war.
Turning to the situation in Gaza, Pope Leo was visibly emotional as he addressed the humanitarian crisis in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
“I am deeply pained by what is happening. Let the fighting cease immediately, let humanitarian aid be provided to the exhausted civilian population, and may all hostages be released,” he said.
His words were a plea for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of civilians who continue to endure the devastating effects of the conflict.
Despite the grim realities in Ukraine and Gaza, Pope Leo found a glimmer of hope in the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, two nations with a history of border disputes and military standoffs.
He expressed cautious optimism that the ceasefire could lead to a lasting peace, stating, “I hope that, through the upcoming negotiations, a lasting agreement may soon be reached.”
Pope Leo XIV turned to faith as a source of hope, urging people to work together for a peaceful future.
“How many other conflicts are there in the world?” he asked, emphasizing the need for global solidarity to address the many crises unfolding across the globe. His message was a powerful call for peace, urging world leaders to take action before more lives are lost
