Pope Leo XIV Touches Down in Equatorial Guinea, Concludes Africa Tour
Pope Leo XIV arrived in Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday, marking the final stop of his multi-nation visit across Africa, a tour that has drawn global attention for his increasingly outspoken position on human rights and governance.
The pontiff was received in the राजधानी city of Malabo by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, whose decades-long rule has made him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders.
Ceremonial music filled the air as the pope disembarked, walking alongside the president on a red carpet amid cheers from a large crowd of worshippers.
Many in attendance waved, sang hymns, and donned clothing bearing the pope’s image, creating a festive yet symbolic welcome.
This visit carries historical resonance. It comes four decades after Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to set foot in Equatorial Guinea, a milestone moment that opened a rare window of global religious engagement with the oil-rich but tightly governed nation.
Leo XIV’s presence is particularly significant given the country’s political climate. Since taking power in 1979, President Obiang has presided over a state often described as one of Africa’s most closed political systems, with limited space for dissent.
Against this backdrop, observers are closely watching whether the pope will use his platform to address issues of civil liberties, governance, and social justice.
Throughout his African journey, the pope has emphasized themes of dignity, accountability, and compassion—messages that resonate strongly in regions grappling with inequality and political tension.
His final stop in Equatorial Guinea is expected to reinforce those themes while also strengthening ties with the local Catholic community.
As the tour draws to a close, attention now turns to the lasting impact of his messages, particularly in countries where calls for reform continue to grow.
