Teacher Killed as Terrorists Kidnap Students Sitting NECO Exam in Borno

A teacher has been killed and an unspecified number of students abducted after suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a secondary school in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attackers invaded Government Day Secondary School on Monday while candidates were writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination.

Residents said the insurgents arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, with some reportedly dressed in military camouflage, before opening fire and causing panic across the community.

One teacher was killed during the assault, while another suffered gunshot injuries. The whereabouts of several students and teachers taken from the school remain unknown.

Eyewitnesses said the attack coincided with the town’s market day, allowing the gunmen to move through the area before whisking away their victims.

Some residents claimed soldiers stationed in Lassa had left for a routine patrol in nearby Uba, about 16 kilometres away, shortly before the attack. The military has not responded to the allegation.

A resident said the terrorists fired sporadically as they entered the town before forcing students writing the examination and some teachers into the bush.

Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, saying security operatives are working to determine the number of missing persons and rescue those abducted.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over the security of schools in Borno State, where insurgent violence has continued to threaten education and civilian communities.
