Fresh facts have emerged over the heartbreaking death of the 21-month-old son of celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, following a brief illness during the family’s Christmas stay in Lagos.
The toddler, identified as Nkanu Nnamdi, reportedly took ill after developing an infection while the family was on holiday in the country.
Sources close to the family disclosed that arrangements had already been concluded for an emergency medical evacuation abroad, with a specialist medical team scheduled to transfer the child to the United States for advanced treatment on January 7.
According to those familiar with the case, the child was taken to a private hospital in Victoria Island on January 6, 2026, mainly to carry out medical investigations requested by the foreign medical team ahead of the planned evacuation.
He was said to have arrived at the facility in stable condition.
However, before the evacuation could take place, the child’s condition reportedly worsened.
Family sources have since raised serious concerns about the quality of medical care provided in the critical hours leading to his death.
They questioned whether standard clinical procedures were properly followed and whether timely interventions were made when his condition began to decline.
“This was not a case of fate,” one source said. “Those close to the family believe the situation could have been managed better. With the right care, that child might still be alive.”
The bereaved parents have remained silent publicly, requesting privacy as they mourn their loss. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to obtain an official response from the medical facility involved, as calls grow for a thorough review of what transpired in the final hours.
The tragic incident has reignited conversations about the state of emergency paediatric care in Nigeria and the urgent need for stricter medical oversight and accountability.
