If history is not a burden on the memory, then it is an illumination of the soul.

Personally, I don’t want to dwell so much on the endless opportunities that would become ours when this becomes the only lens through which we see history.

For it would help us to understand that history is not just a collection of facts to remember, but rather a source of insight and understanding that can enlighten and transform us.

Once again, for your viewing pleasure: behold some interesting events that took place on this day in times past.

On this day in 1945, the Smoke Tragedy leaves 355 workers dead in the underground copper mine of El Teniente, Chile

Still on this day in 1960, Charlotte Motor Speedway holds its first NASCAR race, the inaugural World 600.

Today in 1961, Kuwait declares independence from the United Kingdom.

According to Today in History, it was on this day in 1988 that Pope John Paul II canonizes 117 Vietnamese Martyrs.

Regrettably on this day in 2020, snimal rights advocate Regan Russell is run over and killed by a transport truck outside of a pig slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario.

On this day in 1965 Algerian Coup d’État: In Algeria, Colonel Houari Boumédiène successfully led a bloodless military coup that overthrew the country’s first post-independence president, Ahmed Ben Bella.

Also on this day in 1979 Ugandan Constitutional Clash: Following the fall of Idi Amin, Uganda’s interim President Yusufu Lule entered a major political standoff at Entebbe State House. He refused to submit his new cabinet appointments for legislative oversight, which triggered protests and his eventual removal from the office just days later.

Amazingly in 2025 on this day, Nigeria witnessed the Benin Bronzes Restitution. In a significant victory for cultural restitution, Nigeria officially celebrated the return of 119 stolen Benin Bronzes from the Netherlands. A handover ceremony displaying the returned treasures took place at the National Museum in Lagos.

Sadly on this day in 2018,Koko, western lowland gorilla and user of American Sign Language died. For the records, he was born in the year, 1971.

Today is the birthday of Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and former Mayor of London. He was born in 1964

Today is the birthday of Nuno Mendes, Portuguese footballer. The skillful and talented player who is representing his country at the FIFA World Cup was born on this day in 2002. He left-back for the Paris Saint German side.
