Today in History

John F. Kennedy offered an insightful view about history when he said “it is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing into the future. To try to hold fast to a part of it is to be swept aside.”

No doubt, history’s dynamic and unstoppable nature is central to that idea but the takeaway is that history is a continuous flow, constantly shaping our present and future.

Again, any attempt to cling to past events or traditions can be futile, as history’s momentum will inevitably carry us forward.

Let’s go down memory lane for some exciting education.

On this day in 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa reached what would become known as the Pacific Ocean.

Still on this day in 1956, TAT-1, the first submarine transatlantic telephone cable system, is inaugurated.

According to Today in History, in 1962, on this day, the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria was formally proclaimed. Ferhat Abbas is elected President of the provisional government.

Again on this day in 1964, the Mozambican War of Independence against Portugal began.

Today in History also reveals that in 1992, on this day,NASA launched the Mars Observer. Eleven months later, the probe would fail while preparing for orbital insertion.

It was equally on this day in 1967, that Emmanuel Ifeajuna (1935–1967), the former Nigerian army officer and Commonwealth Games high-jump gold medallist, was tried by a Biafran military tribunal and executed on 25 September 1967. Multiple histories and contemporary accounts record the date (execution reported at about 1:30 pm).

Today in history has shown that Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader, (otherwise known as the bravest African man alive) is recorded as born 25 September 1967. (biographical entries list this as his birthdate).
