On this day in 1961, Viasa Flight 897 crashed after takeoff from Lisbon Airport, killing 61.

Still on this day in 1966, former Congolese Prime Minister, Évariste Kimba, and several other politicians were publicly executed in Kinshasa on the orders of President Joseph Mobutu.

Amazingly, it was on this day in 1967 that the Nigerian Eastern Region declared independence as the Republic of Biafra, sparking a civil war.

Today in History has it that in 2012 of course on this day, former Liberian president Charles Taylor is sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in atrocities committed during the Sierra Leone Civil War.

Again, on this day in 2013, Nigeria passed a law banning same-sex marriage.

Interestingly, on this day in 2024, Donald Trump was convicted of falsifying business records in his New York trial, the first time a former President of the United States has been found guilty in a criminal case.
