UN reports that severe flooding in Sudan has blocked aid deliveries to famine-stricken areas.

Flooding in Sudan has severely hampered efforts to deliver aid to regions already suffering from famine, the UN reported. According to the UN refugee agency, heavy rains have affected over 11,000 people, many of whom are displaced, in North Darfur and other areas. The ongoing conflict between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, particularly in the Zamzam camp, which now shelters over half a million people.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) warned that parts of North Darfur are experiencing “the worst form of hunger” due to restricted humanitarian access. A Sudanese Red Crescent emergency team confirmed that 3,000 homes were destroyed in Abu Hamad, with local media reporting 17 deaths in the city.

The situation is dire, with the UNHCR stating, “The humanitarian needs are reaching epic proportions as hundreds of thousands of civilians remain in harm’s way and famine has recently been confirmed in a displacement site.” Local organizations have called for urgent government intervention and community solidarity to address the disaster.
