Young Nairobi Mother Dies in Remand, Leaving Behind Her Infant Daughter
A heartbreaking story has emerged from nairobi after a young mother died in remand just days before her court hearing.
She had been arrested shortly after giving birth and remained in custody with her baby girl, who is less than a year old.
Despite efforts by her lawyer, advocate wangari, the woman’s family was too poor to raise the bail money, even after it was reduced from ksh 100,000 to ksh 40,000.
As her health began to fail, she was taken to the hospital, where she sadly passed away before ever getting a chance to defend herself in court.
Her death has exposed how deeply vulnerable women suffer when they are detained after childbirth.
Wangari explained that the postpartum period is fragile, and being arrested at that time puts both the mind and body under extreme stress.
The baby, who had been sleeping next to her mother in the cell, now remains in remand without her.
The family, already struggling with poverty, must now find a way to bury their daughter and raise her child without any support system.
The legal team had been praying for a compassionate release, but instead of freedom, they received her death summary.
Advocate wangari is now appealing to the public to help the grieving family with burial costs and to ensure the little girl grows up surrounded by care and dignity. Contributions can be made through paybill 4699532.

She also vowed to continue fighting for other mothers and children caught in the painful gap between the law and true justice, so that no one else suffers the same fate.
