Nigeria’s Political Landscape: Ohanaeze Hails ADC’s Role in Stopping One-Party Drift, Urges Tinubu to Reassess Governance
The Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has praised the recent adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by Nigeria’s opposition coalition, stating that it has successfully halted the nation’s slide toward a one-party state. This move, Ohanaeze believes, marks a significant milestone in maintaining a diverse political landscape, reducing the influence of those trying to undermine opposition parties like PDP, LP, SDP, and APGA.
In a joint press statement, the group also urged the Nigerian government, under President Tinubu, to take immediate action to address the nation’s economic challenges. Ohanaeze called on the president to confront his administration’s inefficiencies, especially in sectors like the economy, security, and health, and to reevaluate his cabinet ahead of 2025 milestones. Notably, while praising the progress in infrastructure and the Federal Capital Territory, the group stressed the urgent need for reforms led by experts and economists to rebuild public trust.
Furthermore, Ohanaeze highlighted concerns over potential political defections, with reports indicating that several Northern governors might shift their allegiance to the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections. They warned that President Tinubu faces growing opposition, particularly with the adoption of the ADC as a formidable challenger, and may face internal betrayal from his own party. The group stressed that the president must reevaluate his political strategies to avoid a potential crisis in his re-election bid.
