2027 Nigeria: Atiku Ready to Step Aside for Obi in ADC Race

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared his willingness to step aside if Peter Obi emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, in what appears to be a strategic nod toward unity within the opposition.

Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise News, where he addressed growing conversations around potential rivalry between himself and Obi for the party’s top ticket.

Rather than fuel speculation of a clash, the former vice president emphasized that the outcome of a transparent and credible process should be respected by all aspirants.

He stated that his position is simple—whoever emerges as the party’s candidate, whether through consensus or a primary election, deserves the full backing of others.

According to him, such an approach is necessary to strengthen internal cohesion and improve the chances of mounting a serious challenge in 2027.

When asked if stepping down for Obi would be difficult, especially considering their previous political relationship during the 2019 elections, Atiku played down the idea.

He maintained that there is nothing unusual about supporting another candidate within the same political platform, stressing that democracy thrives on competition, compromise, and collective responsibility.

Atiku and Obi are widely regarded as the leading figures within the ADC’s evolving a political structure, particularly as talks of a broader opposition coalition continue to gain traction.

Their presence has significantly raised the profile of the party, positioning it as a potential alternative platform ahead of the next election cycle.

Meanwhile, other prominent politicians such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi are also believed to be weighing their options within the party.

Their possible entry into the race is expected to intensify competition and shape the direction of the ADC in the coming months.

With political realignments already underway, Atiku’s remarks are likely to add momentum to ongoing discussions about unity, strategy, and the need for a strong, coordinated opposition as Nigeria gradually moves toward the 2027 elections.
