Fela Kuti Breaks New Ground with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction
Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has reached another historic milestone, becoming the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The late Nigerian icon will be recognised in the “Early Influence” category, placing him alongside global music figures such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, and Celia Cruz.
The announcement was made in the United States during a live broadcast of American Idol on Monday night.
Also earning recognition this year is Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, who will be honoured in the “Performer” category.
Despite making the nomination list, several high-profile acts—including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink—did not make the final selection.
More than 1,200 voters, including artists, historians, and industry professionals, took part in the selection process.
The official induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
This latest recognition adds to a growing list of global honours for Fela, who earlier this year was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award—further cementing his enduring influence on music worldwide.
