The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), representing northern Nigeria, has expressed growing dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with many in the region regretting their vote for him in the 2023 elections. Alhaji Shettima Yerima, the group’s president, stated that unless significant changes occur in the country’s security and economy, northern Nigerians are prepared to oppose Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Yerima highlighted the high expectations placed on Tinubu after the eight years of what he described as the “failed” Buhari administration. “In some quarters, there are certain regrets,” Yerima shared, reflecting on the northern community’s disillusionment. He emphasized the struggles faced under Buhari’s leadership, which led to the hope that Tinubu would bring new solutions as a democratic leader rather than a military figure. However, the results so far have been disappointing.
While acknowledging the deep challenges inherited from the previous government, Yerima pointed out that the implementation of policies is critical. “There must be a cushioning effect to prevent people from unnecessary suffering,” he urged, highlighting that despite difficult circumstances, the government should have done more to mitigate hardships.
The northern leader also criticized state governors in the region for relying on federal allocations and failing to explore local revenue-generating initiatives. He suggested that decentralizing power would encourage states to become more self-sufficient, ultimately benefitting the nation as a whole.
Although frustration is high, Yerima remains cautiously optimistic, stating, “Some of us are not in a hurry to conclude that Tinubu has failed. Let us give him some benefit of the doubt.” However, if his administration continues to fall short of expectations, northern Nigerians may regroup to support alternative leadership in the 2027 elections.
The growing discontent from northern Nigeria is not surprising given the high hopes people had for a new administration after years of underperformance. While some of the challenges faced are undoubtedly complex, the lack of visible improvement in key areas like security and economic stability is making it harder for many to remain patient. However, the willingness to give Tinubu a second chance is a balanced approach—recognizing that change takes time but also stressing the importance of tangible results to secure future support.
