The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has firmly opposed Nigeria’s newly approved 50% telecom tariff hike, calling it “a no-no.” NATCOMS president, Deolu Ogunbanjo, criticized the increase, saying, “It is so much for subscribers to bear…you are now looking at telcos asking for 100% and NCC now is granting them 50%.” He emphasized that Nigerians are already struggling with rising fuel and electricity costs.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved the increase following requests from telecom operators like ALTON and ATCON, who argue it is necessary for maintaining service quality.

MTN CEO, Karl Toriola, supported the hike, saying it addresses “sustainability” and service quality. However, Ogunbanjo disagreed, proposing a more modest 5-10% rise, and warned that NATCOMS would take legal action if the increase stands.
