Rebels from the Rwanda-backed M23 group have killed Maj Gen Peter Cirimwami, the military governor of North Kivu, during an attack on the frontline in eastern DR Congo.
The conflict has escalated rapidly in 2025, with the M23 seizing key towns like Masisi, Minova, and Sake, while pushing towards the strategic city of Goma.
“The town of Goma is held in a vice, the town is suffocated… this population is suffering enormously,” said local union leader Bahala Shamavu Innocent.
Over 400,000 people have fled their homes, and more than 200 civilians have died as a result of the fighting. Amid fears of food shortages, many have been urged to evacuate the city.
As the situation worsens, President Felix Tshisekedi cut short his trip to the World Economic Forum to address urgent security concerns. The UN has expressed alarm, warning that the conflict risks spilling over into a broader regional war.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for international respect of DR Congo’s sovereignty and an end to all support for armed groups.
