Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian coach of Mali’s national football team, is determined to help the Eagles secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, striving to “write history” for the country.
Currently, Mali sits fourth in Group I, trailing leaders Comoros and second-placed Ghana by four points after four matches.
Saintfiet, who took over last August, remains hopeful despite the challenge. “We are really not in a good position right now, but I still think we can do it,” he said in an interview with BBC Sport Africa.
Looking ahead to the six remaining qualifiers, he added, “We are going to try to win all six games and see what it brings, and to qualify for the World Cup.”
The coach praised Mali’s talent pool, which includes players like Yves Bissouma, Nene Dorgeles, and Lassine Sinayoko, stressing that his main task is to “select the best team” from this wealth of talent. “It’s a big luxury to have so many quality players,” he explained
