Enugu State is preparing to launch its climate policy, action plan, and climate education manual for schools.
This milestone comes as climate action grows across Nigeria at the state level. Experts suggest that Enugu’s climate policy could “lay the foundation for substantial socioeconomic transformation,” with the goal of increasing its GDP from $4.4 billion in 2023 to $30 billion by 2031.
However, sectors like agriculture, energy, and natural resources, vital for growth, face challenges worsened by climate change.
Experts warn that if these issues are not addressed, they could “hinder the state’s economic transformation objectives” and worsen vulnerabilities for both marginalized and privileged groups.
In response, Enugu has developed the Enugu State Climate Change Policy and Action Plan (ESCPAP), aiming for a “sustainable green economic transformation” that is both “scientific and evidence-based.”
This policy enhances the state’s Environmental and Climate Protection Law and integrates a framework that aligns economic goals with sustainable development.
The ESCPAP is a “pioneering effort” to drive sustainable growth while addressing climate change. It is the first subnational climate initiative in Nigeria to include “long-term emissions modeling, microenergy audits, and extensive engagement with stakeholders.”
Key benefits of the plan include:
“Integrating climate action within economic development,”
“Promoting green job creation,”
“Improving climate resilience,”
“Supporting national climate goals,”
“Transitioning to green energy,”
“Establishing a climate curriculum for Smart Green Schools,”
“Facilitating green financing solutions.”
These actions align with the vision of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration, which is committed to both industrial and environmental progress.
In addition, the Climate Education Handbook, developed by the Society for Planet and Prosperity and the University of Bristol, provides a resource for students, teachers, and school clubs.
The handbook, which has been validated by key stakeholders, aims to equip young people with the tools needed to address climate change. It aligns with “global sustainability objectives and local educational priorities.”
The launch event is set for Monday, March 17, 2025, at the Old Governor’s Lodge in Enugu, with key dignitaries expected to attend, including government officials, climate experts, educators, and development partners.
