Kenyan police have uncovered two bodies and rescued 57 individuals from a church in Migori County, where they were reportedly subjected to extreme religious practices.
The bodies were found at the St Joseph Missions of Africa Church, with one victim discovered “lying on the floor in a prayer room, fully covered by a white robe and a grey sheet,” according to a police report.
The rescued individuals were described as weak and emaciated, but when taken to a local hospital, they “refused medical care and instead started singing religious songs and making strange noises,” the report added.
This case brings unsettling memories of the Shakahola forest disaster in 2023, where over 400 bodies, many of them children, were exhumed from a mass grave tied to a doomsday cult.
Paul Mackenzie, leader of the Good News International Church, is facing multiple charges, including murder and terrorism, after allegedly convincing his followers to starve themselves and their children to prepare for the end of the world. Mackenzie has denied the charges, and the case is still ongoing.
