Simi, the renowned Nigerian singer and songwriter, recently opened up about her emotional philosophy, revealing that she has never been heartbroken. In a candid conversation with VJ Adams, she shared that her ability to avoid heartbreak stems from a deep sense of self-awareness and a commitment to protecting her mental health.

“If it’s not right for me, I walk away,” she said, underscoring the principle that guides her interactions with others. This revelation was featured in The Nation Newspaper on May 7, 2025, offering a rare glimpse into how the singer navigates emotional connections.

While Simi admitted that she has felt emotional pain, she clarified that she’s never experienced heartbreak in the conventional sense. “I don’t think I’ve ever been heartbroken, but I’ve been hurt before,” she noted.

According to her, the difference lies in how she processes and responds to difficult emotions. Rather than holding on to what causes distress, she chooses to remove herself entirely from toxic or unproductive relationships—romantic or otherwise.

She further explained that her emotional strategy is rooted in her mental makeup. “The way my brain is wired is to walk away from it,” she said, describing how she instinctively detaches from situations that don’t feel safe or fulfilling. This, she believes, has been crucial to her emotional resilience over the years.

Simi emphasized that this approach is not limited to love or romance. “This isn’t even only for relationships,” she said. “If I have friends that make me feel unsafe, I’m ready to cut it off because I have anxiety.” Her strong sense of personal boundaries allows her to manage anxiety and prevent emotional fallout by eliminating sources of discomfort from her life.

Reflecting on her past, Simi admitted she may have unintentionally caused others pain by choosing herself. “I’ve probably broken someone’s heart though,” she said, noting that while she values emotional honesty, her decisions are guided by self-preservation. “I never wanted someone to date me so that I don’t feel bad or because they pity me. Let me feel bad, then I’d get over it,” she added.

Ultimately, Simi believes that love comes with risk, but that doesn’t mean one has to endure suffering to experience it.

“When you love people, there’s always the capacity for them to hurt you,” she concluded. By drawing clear lines and honoring her emotional limits, Simi continues to navigate life and relationships with clarity, courage, and care.
