Eunice Bright Ekwok, a 32-year-old mother from Abuja, claims a private doctor stole one of her twin babies during childbirth in April 2021.

She delivered at Divine Rain Maternity Clinic, where she underwent a cesarean section under anesthesia. Though multiple antenatal scans had confirmed she was carrying twins, Ekwok says she woke up to find only one baby. The clinic told her the second child had died.

Nearly a year later, during an immunization visit, Ekwok spotted a child with the doctor’s wife. To her shock, the child looked exactly like her son. “Same face, same legs, same hair,” she said. “Everything was the same.”

Her efforts to retrieve medical records were unsuccessful. The clinic first refused to share her scan results, then later claimed her file had been destroyed in a fire. Requests to see the deceased baby’s body were also denied.

Determined to find answers, Ekwok began visiting the doctor’s home under the pretense of selling clothes. However, this led to multiple arrests and legal charges, as she and her husband were accused of attempting to steal the child.

The family insists the child is their missing twin and continues to call for a DNA test. They allege that police have refused to order one, possibly due to the doctor’s influence. The doctor declined to comment, saying the matter is already in court.

Think Cross River, a local advocacy group, has taken up the case. Its leader, Papa Dom Cklamz Enamhe, condemned the treatment of the Ekwoks and demanded a proper investigation, including DNA testing.
