Peter Obi Decries Justice System in Nigeria Over Detention of Ibom Air Passenger

Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed concern over what he describes as a display of double standards in Nigeria’s justice system, following the arrest and detention of Comfort Emmanson, a female passenger on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos.

Emmanson was recently arraigned and remanded for allegedly assaulting airline staff during the flight. In a statement shared via his official X account, Obi stated that while inappropriate behavior towards airline personnel should be addressed, the handling of Emmanson’s case reflects broader issues within Nigeria’s legal and judicial systems.

He pointed to a separate incident involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, known as K1 De Ultimate, who was accused of disrupting a flight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. According to Obi, despite the severity of that incident, no legal action has been taken against Ayinde, while Emmanson was promptly taken to court and detained.

“It is troubling that someone who allegedly delayed a flight and endangered many is yet to be arrested, while a young woman is already behind bars for a lesser offence,” Obi said. “This disparity sends the wrong message about justice in Nigeria—it appears to favor the influential and punish the powerless.”

Obi also criticized the manner in which Emmanson was reportedly treated, describing her alleged public stripping as degrading and unjustified. He contrasted her treatment with the impunity enjoyed by some high-ranking individuals accused of large-scale corruption.

“The real injustice is that those who divert public funds are rarely held accountable, yet ordinary citizens face severe punishment for minor infractions,” he said.

He called on the Minister of Aviation and other relevant authorities to explain the unequal treatment and reaffirmed that justice in Nigeria must be impartial and serve all citizens equally.

In response to the incident, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has imposed a lifetime flight ban on Emmanson. According to a statement by AON spokesperson Obiora Okonkwo, the ban, which applies to all AON member airlines, takes immediate effect.

AON also warned that similar conduct in the future would lead to the same penalty, reinforcing its stance against any form of in-flight misconduct.
