US Sends Strategic Military Support to Nigeria in Fresh Push Against Terror, Banditry

The United States has delivered a fresh batch of military equipment to Nigeria, stepping up security cooperation as the country battles terrorism, banditry and widespread kidnapping.

The delivery, described as “critical military supplies,” was confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in a post on X.

According to the command, the equipment was handed over to Nigerian security partners in Abuja to strengthen ongoing operations and deepen bilateral defence ties.

“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and underscores our shared security partnership,” AFRICOM said.

The latest support comes at a time of renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Abuja over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, particularly the activities of jihadist groups and armed criminal networks operating across several regions of the country.

In recent weeks, senior officials from both countries have held high-level talks focused on intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism cooperation and military assistance.

The discussions followed growing concerns in Washington over rising violence in Nigeria, including attacks linked to extremist groups.

A few weeks ago, the US War Secretary, Pete Hegseth, met with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and members of his team to review the security situation and explore ways to strengthen joint efforts against insurgents and bandits.

US officials say the delivery of military equipment is part of a broader strategy to help Nigeria stabilise troubled مناطق, improve operational capacity and restore public confidence in national security.

The move also reflects a wider commitment by the United States to support Nigeria’s fight against violent extremism and transnational crime, which continue to pose serious threats to lives, livelihoods and economic activity across the country.

Security analysts say the latest support could boost Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations, especially in areas where armed groups have maintained strongholds despite years of military campaigns.
