Can You Really Trust a Stranger Online? Irodili in Conversation with Troco Technology

Irodili:

In Nigeria, many online transactions begin with excitement and end in regret. Money is sent. Silence follows. And hope slowly turns into loss.

So the question remains: can strangers really trade safely online?

That question leads directly to Troco Technology.

Founded in February 2024 by Ijeoma Stella Ezeugo and Ibeh Ugochukwu Bonaventure, Troco Technology is a Nigerian mobile logistics and escrow platform created to make online transactions safe, transparent, and trustworthy. The platform acts as a neutral third party, holding funds securely until both buyers and sellers fulfill their obligations.

Troco operates with Heads of Department in each state and has branches in Rivers State, Lagos State, Kano State, Imo State, and Niger State. On the Troco app, merchants act as administrators, monitoring and approving transactions between buyers and sellers.

A buyer finds a smartphone on Facebook Marketplace or Jiji for ₦300,000. They request an inspection through the Troco app. A Troco inspector verifies the phone. After approval, the buyer pays ₦300,000 into escrow. The seller sees the escrow payment and releases the phone to a courier. Once shipment is confirmed, a Troco merchant authorizes release of the funds.

This mirrors standard commercial practice, like a letter of credit, and is used by eBay, Alibaba, AliExpress, Stripe, and Binance. Troco’s mission: enable safe, seamless trading between people who may never meet in person.

The Conversation:

Irodili:

“Let’s be honest. Sending money to someone you’ve never met feels like gambling. Millions are lost daily. So tell me, why should anyone trust Troco Technology?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“That fear is exactly why Troco exists. We didn’t build Troco for perfect markets. We built it for real Nigerians who buy online and pray after payment.”

Irodili:

“Interesting. But trust is a big word. Who actually stands in the middle when things go wrong?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Troco does. We act as a neutral third party. No one gets paid until obligations are fulfilled. No shortcuts. No stories.”

Irodili:

“So walk me through it. I see a phone on Facebook. I don’t know the seller. What stops me from being scammed?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“You request an inspection on Troco. Our inspector confirms the phone is real and matches the advertised specifications. Only then does payment enter escrow.”

Irodili:

“And the seller?

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“The seller sees the escrow payment, not cash. Once the courier confirms shipment, a Troco merchant authorizes the release. Trust is enforced by process, not promises.”

Irodili:

“That sounds like how global platforms operate.

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Exactly. We’re bringing that same standard to Nigeria, built for our realities.”

Irodili:

“Who are the people behind this?

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Troco Technology was founded by Ijeoma Stella Ezeugo, CEO, and myself, CTO. We saw the trust gap in online trade and decided to build infrastructure to remove fear.”

Irodili:

“And where is this all happening from?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Onitsha. One of Africa’s largest commercial hubs. If a solution works in Onitsha, it can work anywhere in Nigeria.”

Irodili:

“How is Troco’s leadership structured to balance strategy and execution?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Our leadership includes the CEO, COO, CTO, and VP of Sales. Each focuses on strategy, innovation, operations, and growth, ensuring a balance between planning and execution.”

Irodili:

“How does Troco ensure fast decision-making in a fast-moving logistics environment?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Agile leadership, data-driven insights, open collaboration, and clear processes. That’s how we adapt quickly while keeping customers satisfied.”

Irodili:

“What are the core departments?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Operations, Technology, Customer Experience, and Finance. They work closely to ensure seamless service nationwide.”

Irodili:

“Which roles are most critical to daily success?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Our IT Managers. They ensure secure networks and manage data flow across all operations.”

Irodili:

“What values does Troco prioritize in hiring?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Integrity, innovation, customer-centricity, collaboration, and accountability. Candidates who embody these values are problem-solvers, adaptable, and communicative.”

Irodili:

“How does Troco invest in training employees?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Through onboarding, upskilling, reskilling, leadership training, technical training, and soft skills development.”

Irodili:

“How is performance measured?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“KPIs, regular feedback, data-driven insights, and balanced scorecards to ensure fairness and growth.”

Irodili:

“What qualifies an employee for promotion?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Performance track record, leadership potential, adaptability, innovation, and collaboration.”

Irodili:

“Typical career path?

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Entry-level roles → mid-level management → senior leadership → executive positions.”

Irodili:

“How does Troco encourage internal mobility?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Job rotation, internal postings, cross-functional projects, leadership development, and performance-based promotions.”

Irodili:

How does Troco position itself for long-term career growth?

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Clear pathways, investment in people, industry leadership, competitive benefits, and continuous innovation.”

Irodili: Last question. What happens when two strangers trade without Troco?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Hope. Fear. Risk.”

Irodili:

“And with Troco?”

Ibeh Bonaventure:

“Process. Proof. Protection.”

Irodili:

“That’s a dangerous idea.”

Ibeh Bonaventure (smiles):

“Only for scammers.”

Irodili: In a market built on risk, Troco is building certainty. For anyone who has ever lost money online, that might just change everything.”
