Demand Grows for FG to Detain Gumi Over Alleged Remarks on Banditry
Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Federal Government to arrest controversial Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, over comments linked to the country’s worsening insecurity.
Adeyanju made the call on Wednesday following the circulation of a viral video in which Gumi allegedly spoke about Fulani herders and banditry.
In the video, the cleric was heard saying Fulani herdsmen “are going nowhere,” insisting that they remain part of the Nigerian society and must continue to coexist with other communities.
Reacting through a post on his Facebook page, Adeyanju accused Gumi of making statements capable of encouraging terrorism and insecurity in the country.
According to him, individuals who openly sympathise with terrorists should be treated as terrorists themselves.
He further argued that only a weak state would allow people making such remarks to operate freely without consequences.
Adeyanju urged the government to take immediate action against the cleric, saying his arrest would serve as a warning to others allegedly promoting violent activities in the country.
